ARISS contact planned with school in Bree, Belgium

An International Space Station school contact has been planned Friday 16 March 2012 at approximately 10:11 UTC with students at Middenschool de Regenboog, Bree in Belgium. 10.11 UTC = 11.11 CEWT.

The contact will be performed by the radio station ON5LL and the downlink signal will be audible over Western Europe on 145.800 MHz FM.

Middenschool de Regenboog (the Rainbow) is a secondary school in Bree, a town in Belgium. This town is well known: it's the town of Kim Clijsters, the tennis champion. Student population of 120 is spread across one campus. The school offers general and vocational education. One teacher, Sabine Teuwen brought the school in contact with Rik Strobbe ON7YD, ARISS mentor who suggested to cooperate and have the wonderful opportunity to contact astronaut Andre Kuipers PI9ISS onboard the International Space Station. The head of the school agreed readily. An amateur radio team led by Johny Verhoeven ON4VJ set up the radio station and prepared the students for the "Space Talk". The whole project is an outstanding means to make pupils, teachers and parents more aware of what lies beyond our planet's borders. This event offers the chance to get more pupils than ever before interested in the process of scientific advancement. The radio contact with Andre Kuipers is a unique opportunity for the school.

The conversation will be conducted in Dutch. Students will ask as many of following questions as time allows.
  1. Adelina (13): Was u zenuwachtig voor de take-off?
  12. Thijs (13): Heeft u vrije tijd in het ISS?
  13. Aissam (13): Zal u ook buiten het station werken tijdens een uimtewandeling?
  14. Hilke. (13): Hoe meet men uw gewicht in de ruimte?
  15. Dietrich (13): Hoe wordt het ISS bestuurd?

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the space agencies, NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning.
