BIPT

What is the BIPT?

BIPT stands for Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications, and is the Belgian regulatory body for postal services and telecommunication. It is the authority regulating all radio communication matters in Belgium including the radio amateur service. The BIPT has the same role as ART in France, RA in United Kingdom, RegTP in Germany, Telecom Agentschap in The Netherlands, the FCC in the USA, etc...

Licences and callsigns

Citizenship Kind of certificate Callsign
if a Belgian radioamateur applies for a licence and if... he is holder of a novice certificate (not HAREC) delivered by the BIPT he gets a callsign ON3
he is holder of an HAREC delivered by the BIPT he gets a callsign ON4 (5, 6, 7, 8)
he is holder of an HAREC (CEPT T/R 61-02) delivered by an other CEPT country (list)
he is holder of a radio amateur certificate of a country who signed a bilateral agreement (USA, ...)
in all other cases he must first apply for a belgian radio amateur examination and pass!
if a foreign radioamateur applies for a licence and if he is a belgian resident (that means that he has a passport with an address is Belgium) the same rules as above are applied  
if a foreign radioamateur applies for a licence and if he is NOT a belgian resident (that means that he has NO passport with an address is Belgium) he holds a CEPT T/R 61-01 licence (list) he may use ON/<home_callsign> without any other care
he is holder of a radio amateur certificate of a country who signed a bilateral agreement (USA, ...) he gets an ON9
he is holder of a radio amateur certificate of a country not covered by any of the above cases, then he must introduce all documents proving that his examination is about the same level of the HAREC he gets an ON9
